Kevin Barry — Finglas Remembers

Kevin Barry (1902-1920), born in Dublin and raised in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow, was an eighteen-year-old medical student and Irish Volunteer executed on 1st November 1920, the first execution since the leaders of the 1916 Rising. His sacrifice left a permanent mark on the Irish consciousness and the local identity of Finglas North West.

His legacy lives on through the street names of the area. For over sixty years, Barry Road, Barry Avenue, Barry Park, Barry Green and Barry Drive have stood in his honour, later joined by Barry Close and the Rathvilly area, named for the Co. Carlow village where he was raised. His name remains central to Finglas heritage.

The Statue, The Making, The Journey

The Beginning

A 2-metre composite memorial depicting Kevin Barry (1902–1920) in a reflective moment, returning from the hurling field with his faithful wolfhound, Cú. The monument captures both his athletic spirit and his devotion to Irish heritage.

All four videos are narrated by Michael Kenny and follow the making of the Kevin Barry Statue.

THE ARTIST

Sculpted by Brendan Walshe of Celbridge. As the artist has since passed away, the original clay work and initial bronze casting have become historically unique and irreplaceable artefacts of Irish community art.

The videos show the spirit this statue holds for the people involved in its creation. They also show Brendan as an artist and as a craftsman. This statue is gifted to the people of Finglas, and these videos help to understand the unity involved in making it happen.
